Sustainable livelihoods on the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Reservoir

The release of 100,000 grass carp and bream fish into the Song Tranh 2 hydropower reservoir has raised the total number of fish released into the reservoir up to 650,000 after 8 years, contributing to the regeneration of increasingly depleted aquatic resources and creating sustainable livelihoods for the people in the districts of Nam and Bac Tra My and the surrounding areas.

On February 08, 2023, in Tra Doc commune, Bac Tra My district, Quang Nam province, Song Tranh Hydropower Company, a subsidiary of EVNGENCO1, in collaboration with the People's Committee of Bac Tra My district, organized the 8th annual fish release program to regenerate aquatic resources in the Song Tranh 2 hydropower reservoir. This is also a regular social welfare activity of the company to regenerate aquatic resources and create sustainable livelihoods for the local people.

The program was attended by representatives from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Quang Nam Fisheries Association, leaders of the district party committee, the People's Committee, and departments of Bac Tra My district, leaders of EVNGENCO1, employees of Song Tranh Hydropower Company, as well as reporters from central and local news agencies.

Mr. Tran Nam Trung, Acting Director of Song Tranh Hydropower Company, delivered the opening speech for the 8th annual fish release program in 2023

During the opening speech, Mr. Tran Nam Trung, Acting Director of Song Tranh Hydropower Company, stated that over the past 8 years, in addition to the management and operation of the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant, the company has always prioritized social welfare, environmental protection, and gradually contributed to improving the lives of people in the project area, aiming to create sustainable livelihoods for local residents. Every year, Song Tranh Hydropower Company collaborates with the Bac Tra My District People's Committee to implement the fish release program, which is an important and humane annual activity that the company and the district are committed to carrying out in the long term.

In this release, Song Tranh Hydropower Company organized to release 100,000 large-size fingerlings (seed fish) into the reservoir, including grass carp and bream fish. Up to now, after 8 releases, the total number of fish released into the reservoir is 650,000 individuals, worth over 400 million VND.

Through monitoring the fishing activities of the local people over the years, the effectiveness of the program has become very clear as the catching volume of the local fishermen in the lake area has been steadily increasing, particularly with species such as grass carp and bream. Many large fish weighing tens of kilogram each have been caught. Many households have been lifted out of poverty and have become prosperous, with some individuals having been able to build sturdy houses and acquire valuable assets such as cars and trucks, etc.
